Heliatek‘s R&D labs

The key to Heliatek’s success is the family of small organic molecules – oligomers – developed and synthesized at its own chemistry lab in Ulm, Germany. The physics lab in Dresden tests these materials and optimizes the cell structure to develop highly efficient OPV cells.

 

Organic material

The research team in Ulm develops new organic materials that are tested by the R&D lab in Dresden. A continuous feedback loop between these two labs allows for fast progress in efficiency and lifetime.

Weighing of organic material

The R&D lab in Dresden applies the new materials to produce test cells. Only 1 g of organic material is required to produce 1 m² of organic solar cells.

Filling of evaporator sources

The organic material is filled into the evaporator sources to produce the test cells. By heating up these sources, the material evaporates and deposits on the substrate material layer by layer.

Preparation of substrate

Small glass sheets serve as a substrate for the test cells. The organic layers are deposited onto these substrates to create OPV cells.

OPV solar cells from the R&D lab

Highly efficient OPV solar cells are produced in the R&D lab. Heliatek has set the world record for OPV with a cell efficiency of 12 %.

Solar films from the R&D lab

If the new material passes the tests with the small cells, larger solar films are produced in the lab. Eventually, the material is released for commercial production.

Heliatek‘s roll-to-roll production

Heliatek developed the world’s first manufacturing line producing organic solar films in a roll-to-roll process using vacuum deposition at low temperatures – a process that holds excellent potential for significantly reducing costs in mass production.

Linear evaporator sources

The linear evaporator sources produce homogeneous and ultra-thin organic layers that are deposited onto the film at low temperatures.

Laser patterning

The organic layers are structured into long, slender cells with laser rays. Thus, only very little active material is removed and the cell separation is almost invisible.

Roll-to-roll production

Solar film from the production line

The ultra-thin solar films weigh only 500 g/m² and are less than 1 mm thick. Thus the films can be easily integrated into various applications by Heliatek‘s partners.

Heliatek solar films

Heliatek is the global technology leader in organic photovoltaic (OPV) based on small molecules.  Our experienced R&D team allows us to further develop our technology in-house. By tuning our organic material, we are able to adapt to the special requirements of our partners and their desired applications.

 

Heliatek record cells

Heliatek holds the world record for organic photovoltaic with a cell efficiency of 12 % on 1.1 cm².

Transparent solar film

Heliatek’s technology offers a range of transparencies for its films, making tinted solar windows possible. A 50% transmission has already been produced in the lab with 6% efficiency.

Range of applications

Heliatek is working together with leading glass manufacturers and building material suppliers to integrate its solar films as energy harvesting components into building elements. The following images show a selection of the diverse applications that are under development.

Heliatek management

Heliatek maintains a total staff of some 85 specialists at its facilities in Dresden and Ulm, Germany. The company is managed by Thibaud Le Séguillon and Dr. Martin Pfeiffer.

 

Thibaud Le Séguillon, CEO

Thibaud Le Séguillon has joined Heliatek in September 2011. Previously, Mr. Le Séguillon held management positions in high-tech companies in the USA and China for more than 20 years.
